Haze worsening in Malaysia

As today, 4 Oct 2015, the haze crisis in Malaysia is worsening. 2 days school closure for all schools. kindergarten, primary and secondary, in Peninsular Malaysia except for the state of Kelantan, due to the the haze for the coming days on the 5th and 6 th October 2015.

The flights services are also facing disruptions due to the air quality and visibility.

Three airports are temporarily closed this morning (reopened as at 6pm today), the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport in Subang, Sultan Abdul Halim Airport in Alor Setar and Sultan Azlan Shah Airport in Ipoh.

It is the first time a "serious crisis" such as this occurred in 10 years since I stayed here in Malaysia. Though there were similar haze occurrences in the previous years they were not as big as today's levels.

Surprisingly, the people in Alor Setar, where I live, conduct their daily routine as usual despite of the air quality. Food stalls by the road side open for business with their regular and drive by customers present.

Only a handful of people that I saw on the streets wearing the protection face mask while outside or riding the motorcycles.

They are known as type N95 mask. There are cheaper mask costing around 0.30 cent per mask, but I was made to understand that better quality mask for N95 can go up to RM6 per piece.

The masks are sold in hardware, 7eleven and pharmacy stores. Some people I noticed are also using the surgical mask, priced at RM 1.10 per piece which is not recommended.

Don`t forget to stay indoors and drink plenty of water.
